Trapeze, the critically acclaimed second album by award-winning vocalist Georgia Mancio, has cemented her position as one of the UK’s brightest young jazz stars. Following the success of her 2003 debut, Peaceful Place, Trapezemarked the culmination of two years’ work with band members Gareth Lockrane, John Pearce, Dave Green/Julie Walkington, Dave Ohm (also the album’s co-producer) and Anselmo Netto. The release in March 2008 was followed by sell-out dates on 3 extensive UK tours which included: support slots opposite Cedar Walton and Steve Smith at Ronnie Scott’s; The Pizza Express; The 606; Wakefield, Sheffield, Huddersfield, Ipswich and Chichester Jazz Clubs; Jagz; The Pizza on the Park; The Fleece; The Hawth; Stamford Arts Centre; Ealing and Swanage Jazz Festivals. Her performances garnered 4 star reviews from both The Standard and The Guardian and at the response from audiences overwhelmingly announced Mancio as a major new talent more than capable of reproducing live the joyous, vibrant and imaginative work heard on record.
Mancio’s music is an intriguing reflection of her Anglo-Latino background: predominantly a jazz standards singer born and raised in the UK, her musical lineage goes back first to her Italian grandparents (an opera singer and concert pianist) and then to her Uruguayan great-grandmother, also a pianist. It is no surprise then to hear the breadth of material covered in one of her shows (from Rodgers and Hart and Harry Warren to Kenny Wheeler, samba, originals, blues, Chilean folk, Italian pop) or the ease with which she switches from English to Italian to Spanish to Brazilian Portuguese. And indeed it is her affinity with language and languages that has been key to her work as a lyricist on songs by Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Kate Williams, Horace Silver, Frank Griffith, Osvaldo Farres and Tim Lapthorn (her song-writing partner).
Other notable work includes: performances with Bobby McFerrin (2003 London Jazz Festival); Sheila Jordan and David Linx (Belgium 2006); Frank Griffith Nonet; Liane Carroll; Andrew Cleyndert; Bobby Wellins and in concert with Ian Shaw, Norma Winstone and Anita Wardell (The True Jazz Voice 2008). She is also making a name for herself on the continent having won first prize at the First Brussels International Young Jazz Singers’ Competition in 2005 and subsequently playing venues and festivals in Italy, Belgium, Portugal and Poland. Most recently she was invited by Ian Shaw to collaborate at The Pizza Express Jazz Club and North Devon Festival.
